In 1932, the world’s most famous actor and silent-movie star was in despair with the onset of talking movies.
Charlie Chaplin felt his character “The Tramp” would not translate to “talkies” and questioned his entire professional endeavour.
So he pioneered what people do in the modern day when they are in an artistic funk.
He went to Bali.
This original home footage shows Charlie Chaplin travelling through Java and Bali when there was . Even to those familiar with Indonesia, the pictures feel like they are from a different, innocent world.
The trip did rejuvenate Chaplin, and he went on to star in epic, time-tested classics such as “The Great Dictator.”
